Description of Course:
The AS and A2 courses are designed to encourage you to take a broad view of technology and design, to develop your capacity to design and make products for the modern market place. You will learn to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing. Both the AS and A2 consist of three main disciplines as follows; a greater depth of study is required for A2:-

a) Materials and components
b) Design and market influence
c) Processes and manufacture

Yr 12
Unit 1: Materials, components and application 2 hour written exam
Unit 2: Learning through designing and making 50 hour coursework project

Yr 13
Unit 3: Design and manufacture 2 hour written exam
Unit 4: Design and make practice 60 hour coursework project

Possible Career Pathways:
The experience gained by following this course equips you for a variety of careers such as:- design engineering, electronics, furniture design, manufacturing industry or further studies at University.

Further Advice:
This subject is coursework orientated, it is essential that you show a successful record of being able to cope with long projects and product study, these are continually assessed. The course encourages you to be self-directed in your approach to your learning. GCSE Resistant Materials, Electronics, Production Design/Graphics are the best preparation for moving into AS/A2 Product Design. Whichever of these Technology GCSEs were taken in Year 11 the AS course will demand commitment from all students. Grade C or above in relevant GCSE Design & Technology is required, as is Grade C or above in Math and English. The AS course is based on the assessment of a number of Design and Make assignments with theory inputs. As well as attending on a regular basis you will be expected to complete set homework, on time. It is expected that you do 5 hours home study each week. You are expected to follow up topics, from the subject specifications and expand subject knowledge, by reading about the subject, this will help to illustrate answers in the theory papers.
