Chemistry

Course Level:

AS & A2 Level
Length of Course: AS One-year, which can be extended to the full A Level by completing the second year.
A2 Two years
Examination Board:

Edexcel

Description of Course:
The AS must be taken before the A2. Both are year-long courses.

The syllabus followed will be the Edexcel Modular Chemistry course. This new specification enables motivating, contemporary chemistry contexts to be included in the teaching and learning programme. The units will incorporate aspects of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. Students will also study chemistry issues that are often in the media and affect their lives. Practical activities are embedded within each unit, which aim to increase students enjoyment and understanding of chemistry together with providing them the skills needed to study science at higher levels. The table below shows the structure of units for the AS and A2 chemistry course:

AS    1    The Core Principles of Chemistry
AS    2    Application of Core Principles of Chemistry
AS    3    Chemistry Laboratory Skills I
A2    4    Rates, Equilibria and Further Organic Chemistry
A2    5    Transition Metals and Organic Nitrogen Chemistry
A2    6    Chemistry Laboratory Skills II

The modular structure means that examinations will be sat in the January and June of both years. Homework will be set two times a week and students will be expected to dedicate three hours of their own time to completing it to the best of their ability.

Possible Career Pathways:
Chemistry is a practical subject and is one of the foundations upon which modern technology is built. Possible career pathways are Chemical, Environmental and Medical Sciences, including Pharmacy, Dentistry and Veterinary studies. It is also useful in Biological, Physical and Material Sciences and Engineering. If you are not sure what career to follow, but are interested in a technically or scientifically based job, chemistry is an essential component of any broadly based scientific education.

Further Advice:
Successful students in the past have studied hard and kept up-to-date with all of the work which has been set. It is desirable to have good GCSEs (B and above) in Science and Maths, but this is not always essential.
