Description of Course: |
This course aims to develop a sports related focus to enrich the post-16 curriculum and to promote an interest and facilitate progression and access to higher education. Therefore, the work is aimed beyond that of A Level and towards the first year of a degree course.
The course comprises one unit:-
Issues and debates in sport
The unit consists of five sections and each section contains six readings. These readings are done by you in your own research/study time, supported by teacher led sessions, which will be seminar/discussion orientated.
Underpinning the course is a sociological perspective upon sport known as figurational or process sociology. However, this sociological perspective is not dealt with in any detail. Yet, there are two concepts from this approach that are used and are helpful in the work studied; involvement and detachment (insider/outsider) and unplanned consequences of social action.
The following sections outline the programme:
Drugs and sport
Sport and violence
Sport, politics and nationalism
Sport and the media
Sport and globalisation
Whether you play sport, watch sport, or are just interested in how sport involves people and can become news in its own right, this course will challenge your views about the role of sport in society. |
