Description of Course: |
AS First Year
The work will introduce Sociology through the study of the family, education and different methods of social research. Sociology is one of the Social Sciences and studies peoples relationships to social groups and the workings of human societies. You will also study issues relating to the core themes of social stratification eg class, race, age, and culture and socialisation. These themes are applied to the topics of family and education.
Unit 1:
You will take a written paper of one hour on the topic of Families and Households. This is worth 40% of the AS Level marks.
Unit 2:
You will take a written paper of two hours on the topics of Sociology of Education and Sociological Research Methods. Part of the questions will ask you to apply your knowledge of methods to the topic of Education. Both the papers will be taken in the summer term of the AS year. The Unit 2 paper is worth 60% of the AS Level marks.
You need to have passed the AS course before taking the A2 assessment. Those who fail to achieve an AS grade in June of Year 12 may resit an AS module in January if they wish to continue to study Sociology in Year 13.
A2 Second Year
After completing the AS course, you can continue to study Sociology to A2 Level. You commence A2 Sociology once you have taken the AS exam. The course focuses on more specialist areas of Sociology such as the study of Crime and Deviance and the Sociology of Beliefs. At A2, you are encouraged to evaluate sociological methods, arguments and evidence. There is more focus on essay writing skills.
Unit 3:
You will take a written paper of one hour and 30 minutes on the topic of Beliefs in Society. This is worth 20% of the total A Level marks.
Unit 4:
You will take a written paper of two hours This will test your knowledge of the topic of Crime and Deviance and of Sociological Theories and Methods. This is worth 30% of the total A Level marks. Both of the papers will be taken in the summer term of the A2 Year. |

| To do well in Sociology you should be interested in social issues and current affairs. You should be prepared to discuss issues in class. You will need to have a good standard of written English and be able to comprehend written items of evidence. You will need to be open minded, tolerant and willing to analyse complex and controversial issues in our Society.
