Description of Course: |
OCR and the Institute of Physics have developed the specification (syllabus). The latest innovations and scientific theories and problems are analysed as part of this revolutionary course.
The AS course provides a satisfying experience for students who choose to take AS Physics as part of a broad post-16 curriculum. At the end of the course you should know more of what physics is about and its place in the world. At the same time the AS course provides a sound foundation for the candidate who chooses to go on to the second year and take the A Level award. The A2 course enables you to go on to degree level studies at University. At the same time, it provides an interesting and stimulating experience for the student who does not pursue the subject further. For each year of the course, there is a Student Book and CD-ROM - the course has a very heavy IT content to support physics learning.
AS
Modules are each set out in two parts. Internally assessed coursework is integrated into the delivery of these two modules (Module C).
Module A - Physics in Action
Module B Understanding Processes
A2
Module D Rise and fall of the Clockwork Universe
Module E Field and Particle Pictures
Module F Advances in Physics
The AS forms 50% of the assessment weighting of the full A Level. Assessment is by means of three units of assessment for AS and six units of assessment for the A Level, which will be explained in more detail during the induction period. |
Possible Career Pathways: |
| A qualification in A Level Physics opens the way (in combination with A Level Mathematics and/or other suitable courses) to medicine and veterinary studies, the whole field of engineering studies, pure science studies, electronics and computer science etc. It is widely regarded as an academic A Level for entry into most Higher Education courses. The field of industry and commerce also recognises the worth of the qualification for direct employment. |
Further Advice: |
| Be prepared for plenty of demanding, numerate work, but also be prepared to enter enthusiastically into practical work, as well as all assigned homework. The course will not be easy but will be very worthwhile. For further information, speak with the Head of Physics at your school. |
