Performing Arts (Acting)

BTEC National Certificate in Performing Arts
Length of Course: The full course is two years. Students can qualify for the BTEC National Award (equivalent to 1 A Level) at the end of the first year as long as units are complete. Periods per week: Normal lessons per week, plus two hours extra time per week which will be partly teacher directed and partly student led.

Description of Course:
This course is very intense with regards to extra curricular rehearsals and performance. The BTEC is a vocational qualification involving advice and workshops from professionals in the performing industry. This is an ideal qualification to equip students with the knowledge and experience to follow into the profession.

During the two years, students will cover four core units:

1. Performing to an audience a full scale theatrical performance to a live audience. Assessment on: candidates professional attitude to rehearsals, the submission of an actors log, the final performance.

2. Performance Workshop preparation of two performances based on a stimulus. Assessment will be practical based and the submission of an actors log.

3. Performing Arts Business Introduces the various roles and responsibilities in the business. Assessment is primarily through written and presented research including an actors CV, budgeting for an arts event and researching various employment opportunities.

4. Principle of acting this unit considers the theories and techniques of two key practitioners through practical workshops, rehearsed performances which are underpinned by appropriate research and textual analysis. Vocal and movement skills will also be analysed and considered resulting in learners preparing and performing at least two roles for assessment from extracts taken from published texts.

On top of this, the course will cover 7 units from specialised sections:


Devising Plays/Drama Improvisations
Acting Auditions
Contemporary Theatre Performance
Classical Theatre Performance
Film and TV acting
Script writing
The practice of Directing Theatre

Possible Career Pathways:
This course will lead you onto University courses or work in the entertainment business, the creative arts, teaching, arts administration etc.
