Mathematics

Course Level:

AS & A2 Level
Length of Course: AS One-year, which can be extended to the full A Level by completing the second year.
A2 Two years.
Examination Board:

OCR (MEI)

Description of Course:
Four of the units cover Pure Mathematics topics such as Algebra, Trigonometry, Graph Sketching and new areas such as Calculus and Vector Geometry. In the other two units, you will study the Applications of Mathematics, in the shape of Statistics and Mechanics. Each module is assessed through a short exam and in some cases a piece of coursework. Homework is set regularly and often (lesson to lesson).

Further Maths For the more able mathematician there is an option to study up to six additional modules to gain a Further Mathematics AS or A2 Level. This is an additional A Level, you will need to be studying the above in order to study Further Mathematics. The structure of the course is similar to the A2 level, and in some cases, there is a degree of student autonomy.

Possible Career Pathways:
At either A2 or Degree Level Maths can open a wealth of unexpected careers. You will be seen as someone with logic and problem solving skills, which are, of course, transferable into almost any career. Your clear strengths will be anything involving numerical or abstract concepts such as Accountancy or Computer Software Design but many students who have followed Maths courses are also recruited into less obviously related careers such as Fashion, Marketing, Architecture and Law.

Further Advice:
Must be tackled with enthusiasm. Expect a significant jump in the level of work from GCSE, as course becomes much more abstract and algebraic. Hard work, but rewarding. For further information, speak to the Head of Maths at your school.
