AS is the first half of the A Level course. At AS you will study 4 topics:-
Unit 1
Lifestyle, Transport, Genes and Health
Topic 1: Lifestyle, health and risk
Topic 2: Genes and health
Assessment: Exam
Unit 2
Development, Plants and the Environment
Topic 3: Voice of the Genome
Topic 4: Biodiversity and natural resources Assessment: Exam
Unit 3
Part 1 Practical biology skills Assessment of practical work carried out during the AS course
Part 2 - Visit or issue report of 2000 words
Assessment: Submission of coursework
A2 is the full qualification. In the second year the course will again cover 4 topics.

The natural environment and species survival

Unit 6
Individual investigation students produce a written report of an experimental investigation which they have devised and carried out.

Fieldwork forms a very important part of the A2 course; it allows you to develop skills and techniques not achievable in the school environment. The week-long residential field trip (approximate cost 200) looks at marine ecology on rocky shores in West Wales; it takes place during the summer term in Year 12. |
Possible Career Pathways: |
| Degree courses in biology, environmental science, medicine, nursing, dentistry, psychology and pharmacy - a small selection of courses with direct links. Entry into many, non-biology related degree courses at University. Employment in the area of pharmacy, biotechnology, catering, the food industry and land management as possible examples. |
