Length of Course: AS One-year, which can be extended to the full A Level by completing the second year.

Description of Course:
The course is structured to enable you to study a range of significant events, individuals and issues of differing times, and to look at history through a range of perspectives social, political, religious and cultural. These will include British and non-British investigations. You will be required to demonstrate and develop the historical skills already used in GSCE work, in particular, you will need to understand and present arguments and to use and evaluate sources.

AS

Unit 1:
The unification of Germany
Germany from 2nd Reich to 3rd Reich 1918-1945

Unit 2:
Mass Media, popular culture and social changes in Britain since 1945
(Beatles, hippies, Diana, film)

A2

The A2 will consist of a further two units:-

Unit 3:
The United States 1917-1954 Boom, bust and recovery

Unit 4:
The Changing Role of Women in Britain 1850 to 1950

Possible Career Pathways:
This qualification is generally useful for administrative posts e.g. banking or insurance. Particularly useful for archaeology, librarianship, archive work, journalism and is relevant for nursing, police, teaching, personnel work and management.

Further Advice:
You should be willing to read widely, debate and deal with conflicting ideas. It would be helpful to have an interest in social and political ideas. You can obtain further information from History departments in your school.
