Description of Course: |
This OCR Level 3 qualification is a one-year course equivalent to one A level. With the option to progress and achieve the equivalent of two or possibly three A levels in year 2. With this Level 3 qualification, students will develop their work-related skills and knowledge, covering advanced issues and topics. They will go into detail in many areas of health and social care, and have the opportunity to take specialists units in the care of babies and young children in year 2 if they choose to continue.
The National Certificate (1 year)
Students complete four mandatory units plus two optional units. Mandatory units are: Working to Quality Practice in Care Settings. Working with Service Users in care settings. Behavioural Awareness in Care. Applied Practical Care in Settings. Optional units: work experience in Health and Social Care and Early Years and Advanced First Aid in Health and Health and Safety.
The National Diploma (2 year)
Students complete the four mandatory units plus eight optional units. The optional units vary, some examples: care in the community, developing skills for Care Assistants, Developing skills for voluntary work.
National Extended Diploma (2 year)
Students achieve the four mandatory units plus fourteen optional units (including no more than six non-specialists units). Some of the optional unit choices are as follows: Child Development, Developing Skills to work with Babies, Health Education and Promotion.
Assessment:
All units are internally assessed within the centre of study and externally assessed by an external moderator from OCR. There are no external tests or examinations for this course. All individual units are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. Each unit is certificated individually. |
Possible Career Pathways: |
| This course will prepare you to work in a variety of health and care professions and you are also able to achieve UCAS points. |
Further Advice: |
| One of your GCSEs at grade C or above should be in Childcare or Health and Social Care. A good grade in English Language is also an indication that you will be able to tackle the subject with confidence. This subject is assignment based with no examination, it is essential that you show a successful record of being able to cope with long projects and independent study. As well as attending on a regular basis you will be expected to complete set homework on time and stick to the deadlines set for assignments. Course Work Placement: |
| This course requires a work placement which the Lowestoft Sixth will organise for you, this is mandatory. The placements will meet the requirements of the course and you will experience working in different care settings. |
