Description of Course: |
The aim of this course is to encourage you to develop your interest and enjoyment in the use of English. You will learn more about its structures and functions and draw on your experience and knowledge of language change, text varieties and language in everyday use. You will learn to express yourself in speech and writing with increasing competence and sophistication, undertaking a varied programme of writing and developing skills of listening critically and attentively to spoken English.
AS is the first half of the A2 level course. It is a stepping-stone to the full A2 level qualification. The AS course consists of two assessed units:
Unit 1: Text varieties and language in social contexts
Unit 2: Creating texts
A2 consists of another two units:
Unit 3: Developing language
Unit 4: Investigating language (coursework) |

| A qualification in English Language gives access to a wide range of courses at degree level, particularly the Arts, Humanities and Communication-based subjects, with its emphasis on spoken and written expression, theoretical knowledge of language and creativity. English Language is a highly regarded qualification and one of the fastest growing subjects at A level. It is welcomed for many careers, in particular journalism, advertising, media, teaching, human resources, etc. |
Further Advice: |
| You will need commitment and an ability to work independently, as the course involves a coursework topic of your own choice. There is some theory involved and so you must be willing to practise and apply it. This is an enjoyable course that develops your skills in both speech and writing skills that are extremely important to both universities and employers. This subject combines well with most AS / A2 subjects, in particular sociology, psychology, media studies and english literature. |
