Description of Course:
Economics is a social science with a long history, but it is up-to-date in that theories have to be applied to constantly changing situations at national and international levels. In essence, economics studies how society uses its scarce resources to satisfy human wants. Computer simulation exercises will be used during the course.

The syllabus examines topics such as: How prices are determined. The working of different types of financial institutions, e.g. banks, and the Stock Exchange. How firms decide how much to produce and at what price they market their output. Is a national minimum wage a good idea? Are unemployment or inflation unavoidable? Can they be conquered by Keynesian or Monetarist policies? Is Privatisation desirable? Should the railway system be returned to the public sector? International Trade. Does a balance of payments deficit matter? How does the Government raise its revenue? Should more be spent on public services? Should Britain adopt the Euro as its currency?

Possible Career Pathways:
Economics is a respected qualification that is accepted by professional bodies in, for example, banking, accountancy and insurance. It also gives a firm foundation for entry to Universities for a whole range of courses.

Further Advice:
The course involves considerable private study on background reading and preparation of essays. Since economic events are occurring all the time, you should be prepared to keep up to date with current affairs by reading a quality newspaper. Economics is not politics, but since politicians implement economic policies, there are obviously close connections. An awareness and interest in political developments is an obvious advantage.
